Drugs

In drug policy Switzerland has adopted a promising middle way between repression and therapy.

Illegal drug trade continues to be fought with unabated commitment. Alongside this, however, drug addicts should have the opportunity to get off their drug dependency and to achieve rehabilitation into society under humane conditions.

The four-pillar concept of the Swiss drugs policy
The Swiss drug policy covers four areas: prevention, therapy, damage reduction and repression.
  • Prevention
Prevention is supposed, above all, to protect young people from getting sucked into drug dependency. In the education system itself a lot can be done for drug prevention by explaining the consequences.
  • Therapy
Therapy opens a difficult but worthwhile way out of dependency. Withdrawal from drug dependency and the rehabilitation of former drug addicts are possible.
  • Damage reduction
Drug addicts should not be pushed further into dependency by repression and exclusion. They should be able to get over their dependency under humane conditions with the lowest level of damage possible.
  • Repression
Anyone who wants to made money out of illegal drugs, destroys the lives of young people and pulls them into a vicious circle of addition, should face the brunt of the law.
