Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Wednesday, June 18, 2008 (mic) PLEASE LEAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRAVEL TO THE QUARTER-FINALS IN BASEL: In the next couple of days the quarter finals of the EURO 2008 will take place in the St Jakob’s Park in Basel. On the 19th of June 2008, Portugal will play against Germany, and on the 21st of June 2008, Holland will play against Sweden or Russia. Both matches begin at 8:45pm. As in the first group games, the visitors of the stadium and public viewing zones are requested to leave enough time to travel, and if possible to use public transport. The mixture of friendly fans, superb collaboration between the security forces, and the intense preparations, are all contributory factors for the successful running of these last three matches. EURO 2008 IN WINTERTHUR. THE 11TH DAY: No rioting or fighting occurred in Winterthur on the 11th day of the EURO 2008. Follwing the matches the streets of Winterthur were filled with high-spirited fans driving in convoys and hooting loudly. The police shut off the Technicumstrasse and the Zeughausstrasse roads until about things had calmed down at about 11:30 pm. Roughly 250 italian met at the bus station and formed a noisy procession down the Technicumstrasse. Following the procession the various fan groups threw verbal abuse at each other. THE BORDER GUARDS TAKE STOCKS: The border guards are pleased with the results following the first 10 matches on Swiss soil. They are part of the national security concept and act as the first filter for people entering the country. They collaborate with the cantons and the security forces from abroad, and fulfil many tasks at the border points for the customs offices and the police forces. Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Tuesday, June 17, 2008 (mic) STABLE SECURITY SITUATION: The cantonal police of Thurgau look back on a positive “first halftime” of the EURO 2008. The fact that no major incidents occurred was due to a constant police presence. On each of the ten match days, the security situation was always under control at despite the rain and the sometimes very active audience. Whenever a difficult situation was brewing, the cantonal police intervened in a friendly but resolute manner and attempted to act as a de-escalation force as long as possible. EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL: The final score in the match between co-host Switzerland and Turkey has caused frustration among some fans. Due to the quick intervention of the security forces the situation was eased. Fortunately, no severe incidents were reported. GALLEN: Following the match Switzerland - Turkey a militant group of about 50 people provoked Turkish football fans in front of the UBS Arena and started brawling. GALLEN: The match Switzerland - Turkey on Wednesday night was followed by minor cases of provocation, damage to property and brawls throughout the canton. No greater incidents were reported. THE FOOTBALL FESTIVAL CONTINUES: The Swiss national football team has been eliminated from the UEFA EURO 2008. However, for Switzerland as host and all the fans, the European Championship goes on. ANOTHER TROUBLE-FREE NIGHT: With around 40 call outs, last night was, from the security forces’ point of view, basically an average night. (Source: http://www.sid.bs.ch) BORDER GUARD JOINED BY FEDERAL POLICE FOR CHECKING TRAINS: The train with 250 Dutch fans, 6 conductors and 2 foreign support officers arrived in Basel the 10/6/08 at 1.50 am. Between Basel and Berne everything went smoothly. Happiness, harmony and a peaceful atmosphere pervaded both of the host cities, Berne and Zurich. The opening of the stadium will be at 5.15 pm. Especially on the motorway A2 between the junction Augst BL and Basel traffic jams are expected. Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Thursday, June 05, 2008 (mic) GOOD PREPARATION: In order to ensure safety and security during the EURO 2008, specific structures have been implemented in the Canton of Aargau: At the police headquarters, a Euro-situation centre has been put into operation. Beyond that, the cantonal police will be assisted by the management support staff and the communal police forces. At today’s conference, cantonal councillors Kurt Wernli and Ernst Hasler informed the media. This was done together with the heads of the cantonal police and the cantonal management support staff. They informed about the joint preparations of the past few months that were put in place to ensure safety in the Canton of Aargau during the EURO 2008. (Source: http://www.securityeuro2008.ch) BLUE BANDANAS: During the EURO 2008, the security forces of the Host City Basel will give away dark-blue bandanas, which may be worn as headscarves or neck scarves. The background for this friendly operation is the fact that also the security forces see themselves as hosts. The small gifts shall sustainably enhance the recollections of the EURO 2008 in Basel. The bandanas are printed with useful information such as the emergency phone number 117, places of interest, and St. Jakob’s Stadium. TRAFFIC JAMS: The Police Corps of Basel are ready for the opening event. Visitors to the stadium as well as the public viewing zones are asked to arrive early and to use public transportation whenever possible. In particular, a high volume of traffic is expected on motorway A2 between the junction Augst BL and Basel from mid-afternoon on.
