PLANNING MEASURES VERIFIED: The big football festival has begun in Switzerland. Thousands of fans and visitors were in attendance in the host cities and the public viewings, bringing with them the long anticipated EURO atmosphere. ORIENTATION AIDS IN SUPPORTER ZONES: The municipal police of Zurich have installed orientation aids in places where many visitors are expected. A four digit number placed on e.g. snack bars will allow rescue workers to locate people in need of aid. (http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch)

PAPIERMUEHLESTRASSE OFF LIMITS: Due to the match Holland vs. Italy, Papiermuehlestrasse will be closed between Guisanplatz and Wankdorf junction from June 8th, 10pm to June 10th, 3 am, approximately. (http://www.police.be.ch)

QUIET NIGHT FOR SECURITY FORCES: During the night after the opening match between Switzerland and the Czech Republic, only 12 people had to be arrested because of hooliganism and attacks against police officers. Around 100 people had to be treated because of minor injuries or health problems, an additional 18 were treated in hospital. ST. GALLEN: SMOOTH OVERTURE: The overture to the EURO 08 was a success in the opinion of the police of St. Gallen, with no incidents worth mentioning. After the game Portugal vs. Turkey, supporters blowing their horns obstructed traffic for a short while.

FIRST EVENING WITH MATCHES IN CANTON OF VAUD: More than 12’100 people saw the matches Switzerland vs. Czech Republic in public viewing zones and almost 8’000 watched Portugal play against Turkey in the canton of Vaud. LONG LIST OF PUBLIC VIEWING ZONES: All around the country the public viewing zones are opening for the first time today. The current overview of the Police Information and Coordination Centre (PICC) at the federal office of police shows that there are 159 public viewing zones. Their overall capacity is for about 600’000 fans. The most public viewing zones can be found in the canton of Zurich (32), followed by Berne (23), Vaud (13), Basel-City (12) and Lucerne (11). The highest capacity has Geneva with place for 123’000 fans. The privately run homepage http://www.public-viewing.ch has more information. FESTIVE DEMONSTRATIONS: The municipal and the cantonal police of Vaud will be taking special measures in order to ensure the safety of town centres and to create pedestrian zones where the fans can enjoy themselves after the EURO 2008 matches. In order to ensure the fluidity and safety of the traffic the police will not be encouraging convoys of cars, and deviations will be put in place. The football fans will be able to express their joy and meet in complete security in the foreseen pedestrian zones. This will guarantee a fluidity of traffic in the town centres, especially for public transport. The police recommends that supporters respect the highway code and take extra care while expressing their jubilation. This will ensure that the festivities can remain wonderful till the last day. POLICE STATION AT THE BERNHARD THEATRE: During the EURO 2008, the City Police of Zurich will operate an around-the-clock police station at the Bernhard Theatre. The police officers of that station will mainly be deployed in case a quick intervention is needed in the Bellevue area. However, no reports can be made at the Bernhard theatre. For this purpose, visitors of the festival are asked to contact one of the regular police stations. EVERYTHING IS READY FOR THE BIG FOOTBALL FESTIVAL: One day before the start of the EURO 2008, Switzerland is ready for this big event. The first large fan groups will begin arriving on Friday. PAPIERMUEHLE-STREET TEMPORARILY CLOSED: The Papiermuehle-Street will temporarily be closed on the occasion of the football match between the Netherlands and Italy on june 9 in Berne. Between Guisan Place and Wankdorf-Junction, the Papiermühle-Street will be blocked for any kind of traffic as from next Sunday, 8 June 2008, 10:00 p.m. through Tuesday, 10 June 2008, approximately 3:00 a.m. During this time, motor-driven road users are asked to spaciously drive around the area of the Stade de Suisse. ARRIVAL OF CZECH FANS: The police authorities of Freiburg (D) are reporting a significant number of Czech fans along the motorway A5 between Freiburg and the Swiss border. GOOD PREPARATION: In order to ensure safety and security during the EURO 2008, specific structures have been implemented in the Canton of Aargau: At the police headquarters, a Euro-situation centre has been put into operation. Beyond that, the cantonal police will be assisted by the management support staff and the communal police forces. At today’s conference, cantonal councillors Kurt Wernli and Ernst Hasler informed the media. This was done together with the heads of the cantonal police and the cantonal management support staff. They informed about the joint preparations of the past few months that were put in place to ensure safety in the Canton of Aargau during the EURO 2008. (Source: http://www.securityeuro2008.ch)

BLUE BANDANAS: During the EURO 2008, the security forces of the Host City Basel will give away dark-blue bandanas, which may be worn as headscarves or neck scarves. The background for this friendly operation is the fact that also the security forces see themselves as hosts. The small gifts shall sustainably enhance the recollections of the EURO 2008 in Basel. The bandanas are printed with useful information such as the emergency phone number 117, places of interest, and St. Jakob’s Stadium. TRAFFIC JAMS: The Police Corps of Basel are ready for the opening event. Visitors to the stadium as well as the public viewing zones are asked to arrive early and to use public transportation whenever possible. In particular, a high volume of traffic is expected on motorway A2 between the junction Augst BL and Basel from mid-afternoon on. EURO 2008 – SAFETY AND TRAFFIC IN LAUSANNE: Due to the increased activities related to the EURO 2008 during the month of June, the police in Lausanne - the capital of Vaud - will modify its operations in order to protect its citizens. A traffic control service will be in operation every day in order to maintain as much as possible fluidity and security on the roads. THE BORDER GUARD CORPS (BGC): The Border Guard Corps (BGC) is Switzerland’s most important national body for civil security and is the uniformed and armed section of the Federal Customs Administration (FCA), which is attached to the Federal Department of Finance (FDF). The BGC accomplishes security policing and fiscal tasks, notably: people, vehicle and object searches, combat against drug trafficking and document forgery, foreigner and traffic policing and the provision of customs services and combat against smuggling. The movement of people and goods is steadily increasing. Around 630’000 people and 330’000 vehicles cross the Swiss border every day. Every year around 100’000 people are refused entry into Switzerland and several thousand people are stopped who entered Switzerland illegally. Based on agreements with cantonal police authorities, the BGC transfers every year a total of 50’000 suspects to the competent police authorities. The detection of nearly 3’000 cross-border drug crimes, 2’000 document forgeries and around 20’000 breaches of the road traffic law further substantiate the record of achievement of the border guard corps. EVALUATION OF THE EXERCISE «STEILPASS 08» IN BERNE: The evaluation of the exercise «Steilpass 08» gave a positive picture of the security forces of the Host City Berne. On the basis of the experiences gained several improvements were made. Berne is ready. A large-scale exercise of the Bernese security forces took place at the Stade de Suisse on May 28, 2008. Approximately 500 police officers, firefighters, medical staff and civil protection personnel were assessed. The main task of the exercise was the handling of a large number of injured persons.
