Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Wednesday, June 18, 2008 (mic) PLEASE LEAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRAVEL TO THE QUARTER-FINALS IN BASEL: In the next couple of days the quarter finals of the EURO 2008 will take place in the St Jakob’s Park in Basel. On the 19th of June 2008, Portugal will play against Germany, and on the 21st of June 2008, Holland will play against Sweden or Russia. Both matches begin at 8:45pm. As in the first group games, the visitors of the stadium and public viewing zones are requested to leave enough time to travel, and if possible to use public transport. The mixture of friendly fans, superb collaboration between the security forces, and the intense preparations, are all contributory factors for the successful running of these last three matches. EURO 2008 IN WINTERTHUR. THE 11TH DAY: No rioting or fighting occurred in Winterthur on the 11th day of the EURO 2008. Follwing the matches the streets of Winterthur were filled with high-spirited fans driving in convoys and hooting loudly. The police shut off the Technicumstrasse and the Zeughausstrasse roads until about things had calmed down at about 11:30 pm. Roughly 250 italian met at the bus station and formed a noisy procession down the Technicumstrasse. Following the procession the various fan groups threw verbal abuse at each other. THE BORDER GUARDS TAKE STOCKS: The border guards are pleased with the results following the first 10 matches on Swiss soil. They are part of the national security concept and act as the first filter for people entering the country. They collaborate with the cantons and the security forces from abroad, and fulfil many tasks at the border points for the customs offices and the police forces. Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Monday, June 16, 2008 (mic) BASEL CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BERNE’S ORANGE EXPERIENCE: Since the beginning of EURO 2008, Benedikt Weibel, Federal Council delegate for the EURO 2008, has visited all host cities, fan zones and fan miles in Switzerland and was able to present an overwhelmingly report at today’s press briefing in Berne. Also after the matches in Basle and Geneva, there were no incidents worth talking about. In Berne, Geneva and Zurich many Turkish fans celebrated their team’s victory with car processions and the traffic suffered no undue disruptions. (Source: http://www.switzerland.com) INTERIM RESULT FOR THE EURO 2008 IN CANTON APPENZELL AUSSER RHODEN: Until now all events related to the EURO 2008 as well other festivities ran smoothly. The police was only called out a few times to take care of some drunken persons. The Appenzell police officers serving at home, as well as those serving in other cantons are all very enthusiastic about their contribution to the EURO 2008. TEMPORARILY CLOSED: The PAPIERMUHLE street will be closed between the Guisan Place and the Wankdorf-Junction, from Monday 16th of June 2008 at 10p.m. till Wednesday 18th of June at roughly 3a.m. During this time, all motor vehicle drivers are requested to avoid the area around the Stade de Suisse. (Source: http://www.police.be.ch) SKIRMISHES AND FIGHTING FANS: Some skirmishes occurred in and around the UBS arena between drunken fans from various countries during the games yesterday. All together 14 people were arrested and released following questioning and identification. Three persons were issued with banning orders for 10 days, and 6 others for 2 days. THE NINTH DAY: Shortly before the end of the game, the traffic in the Zeughausstrasse and the Technikumstrasse came to a standstill due to the large number of departing fans. ZURICH LETZIGRUNG AND SURROUNDINGS: Visitors to the football matches between France and Italy on the 17th of June 2008 are requested to leave plenty of time to get to the stadium Letzigrund. Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Friday, May 30, 2008 (mic) POLICE ALREADY ON THE JOB: The planning and preparation work of the host cities’ cantonal police corps and the other cantonal and municipal police forces with regard to the EURO 2008 is fulfilled. The security forces now step in the operational phase. For all blue-light organisations and the other forces they work with, cooperation remains the key strategy to success. Due to the holiday ban for June the fortified police presence should clearly be noticed by the public with immediate effect. (source: http://www.securityeuro2008.ch) ARMAMENT OF MILITARY FORCES: The Swiss Federal Government has commented on a respective interpellation by National Councillor Josef Lang (Green Fraction/ZG). Due to the subsidiary army operations, the decision regarding the arnament of the Swiss Armed Forces during the EURO 2008 rests with the civil authorities. The Swiss Armed Forces will not be involved in security operations. The law enforcement agencies have therefore decided to immediately take disciplinary actions against criminals in compliance with the code of criminal procedure. The immediate judgment of criminal acts concerns adults and minors. This direct reaction only allows an effective and credible intervention which avoids other noticeable problems caused by the same individual. In order to ensure full mobility and freedom of action for the police forces, several measures like barriers and traffic controls will be needed around the “Amtshaus I” at Bahnhofquai 3. Therefore the Police of the City of Winterthur have launched the campaign “Winti by night - fun & respect”. The campaign calls the party people and the local residents for a respectful behaviour with each other. On the one hand, increased immissions by football enthusiastic fans will be inevitable. For a limited period of time, it needs to be counted with higher noise levels. On the other hand, not all inhabitants of Winterthur share the pleasures of football. Furthermore, many people have a need for sleep. In this sense, respect and mutual understanding are vital for a reconciliation of the diametrically opposed needs.
