Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Wednesday, June 18, 2008 (mic) PLEASE LEAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRAVEL TO THE QUARTER-FINALS IN BASEL: In the next couple of days the quarter finals of the EURO 2008 will take place in the St Jakob’s Park in Basel. On the 19th of June 2008, Portugal will play against Germany, and on the 21st of June 2008, Holland will play against Sweden or Russia. Both matches begin at 8:45pm. As in the first group games, the visitors of the stadium and public viewing zones are requested to leave enough time to travel, and if possible to use public transport. The mixture of friendly fans, superb collaboration between the security forces, and the intense preparations, are all contributory factors for the successful running of these last three matches. EURO 2008 IN WINTERTHUR. THE 11TH DAY: No rioting or fighting occurred in Winterthur on the 11th day of the EURO 2008. Follwing the matches the streets of Winterthur were filled with high-spirited fans driving in convoys and hooting loudly. The police shut off the Technicumstrasse and the Zeughausstrasse roads until about things had calmed down at about 11:30 pm. Roughly 250 italian met at the bus station and formed a noisy procession down the Technicumstrasse. Following the procession the various fan groups threw verbal abuse at each other. THE BORDER GUARDS TAKE STOCKS: The border guards are pleased with the results following the first 10 matches on Swiss soil. They are part of the national security concept and act as the first filter for people entering the country. They collaborate with the cantons and the security forces from abroad, and fulfil many tasks at the border points for the customs offices and the police forces. Daily Overview Security EURO 2008Daily Overview Security EURO 2008, Tuesday, June 03, 2008 (mic) SWISS CUSTOMS WELCOMES ALL OUR FOOTBALL ENTHUSIASTIC VISITORS: Commercial traffic - In principle, there are no special exceptional procedures for the carriage of goods in connection with the UEFA EURO 2008. That means that customs clearance will be carried out using the current infrastructure and in accordance with the current well-rehearsed procedures. As a huge number of arrivals and departures are expected, the customs authorities will make every effort to ensure that visitors are able to clear customs as quickly as possible during the UEFA EURO 2008. (Source: http://www.ezv.admin.ch) FIRST VIDEOCONFERENCE ON SAFETY AND SECURITY: Information exchange between the two host countries Switzerland and Austria is a central element of the safety and security around the EURO 2008. On the one hand the situation reports are exchanged using the Electronic Situation Display (ESD). On the other hand, regular, personal exchange is important on the level of the persons responsible for security matters. For this purpose, a daily videoconference between the two project managers for safety and security during the EURO 2008, in Switzerland, Martin Jäggi and in Austria, Günther Marek, takes place. This videoconference between the two safety co-ordinators was held today for the first time. (Source: http://www.securityeuro2008.ch) EXERCISE FAN ZONE GENEVA: This morning the police forces of Geneva finalized their preparation by carrying out the last exercise in preparation for the EURO 2008. This last exercise of the police officers took place on the public reception square of the fan zone of Plainpalais and the Fan village of Bout-du-Monde. About fifty people acted as supporters and thus allowed the officers present to apprehend various aspects related to these locations. At the fan zone of Plainpalais, where more than 45’000 people are expected, three scenarios allowed the extraction of a group of violent supporters, the search of a person or controlling an area at risk. The second part of the exercise was continued in the fan village of Bout-du-Monde. There, still more than 30’000 people are awaited to enjoy the tournament and more than 3’000 have the possibility to stay there overnight. At this place, various exercises took place in particular by integrating the problems of the camp-site and the areas of accommodation. Local, national and international media were present in order to participate in this presentation. Swiss Customs welcomes all our football enthusiastic visitors!In June 2008, Switzerland joins Austria to become the football stronghold of Europe as the final round of the European Football Championships, UEFA EURO 2008, will be held here from 7th – 29th June 2008. This is a very important sporting event which, for the first time, is taking place in two different customs territories (in the EU member state Austria and Switzerland).

Training flights of the air force above EURO 08 stadiumsThe Swiss Air Force will overfly the four EURO 08 stadiums in Bern, Zurich, Basel and Geneva for training purposes on 4 and 5 June 2008. These flights will serve as airspace training for the EURO 08 games. The planned training flights will be carried out at medium height as follows: on 4 June, between 08.00 and 10.00 hours in Bern, between 10:00 and 12:00 hours in Geneva and between 13:30 and 15:30 hours in Zurich. On 5 June, between 10:00 and 12:00 hours in Basel and between14:00 and 16:00 hours in Basel and Geneva. These flights are of great importance for the pilots with regard to airspace surveillance during the EURO 08 games. Because they do not normally fly over towns, the pilots will be obliged to adjust to the procedures, temporal aspects, visual impressions and special conditions during these few training flights. In addition, the aim is to train the specific procedures under real conditions. During the EURO 08, the Swiss Air Force will be responsible for the security of the airspace. In the normal situation the jets patrolling in the air and prepared for intervention will be neither visible nor audible at all. Under certain circumstances, however, it is conceivable that the fighter would be obliged to fly at low altitudes. This is why these practise flights are necessary.
